Upcoming Release of Morrison's Latest Novel
Written by Dr. Nerad
Tuesday, 03 April 2012

Toni Morrison's latest novel, Home, will be released on May 8, 2012.

"America’s most celebrated novelist, Nobel Prize-winner Toni Morrison extends her profound take on our history with this twentieth-century tale of redemption: a taut and tortured story about one man’s desperate search for himself in a world disfigured by war. Frank Money is an angry, self-loathing veteran of the Korean War who, after traumatic experiences on the front lines, finds himself back in racist America with more than just physical scars. His home may seem alien to him, but he is shocked out of his crippling apathy by the need to rescue his medically abused younger sister and take her back to the small Georgia town they come from and that he’s hated all his life. As Frank revisits his memories from childhood and the war that have left him questioning his sense of self, he discovers a profound courage he had thought he could never possess again. A deeply moving novel about an apparently defeated man finding his manhood—and his home." (Book description, amazon.com).

Jeanette Winterson. The Battle of the Sun. London: Bloomsbury, 2010. http://www.amazon.com/Battle-Sun-Jeanette-Winterson/dp/140880042X/ref=tmm_hrd_title_0

"Jack is the chosen one, the Radiant Boy the Magus needs in order to perfect the alchemy that will transform London of the 1660s into a golden city. But Jack isn't the kind of boy who will do what he is told by an evil genius, and he is soon involved in an epic and nail-biting adventure featuring dragons, knights and Queen Elizabeth I, as he battles to save London." http://www.jeanettewinterson.com/pages/content/index.asp?PageID=593

"Humour is just one weave in this resplendent tapestry of a tale with its wholly convincing backdrop of early 17th-century London slightly askew. There's a real sense of excitement and intrigue as the Magus plans to turn London and everything in it into gold. And if you've spotted that this poetic plan is fundamentally flawed, have no fear, for so has Magus – or, more to the point, Winterson. The Magus has a hidden agenda, and the end is very satisfying indeed. His, however, is not the only villainy afoot, and Queen Elizabeth I herself, along with her Barbary parrot and her real-life alchemist, astrologer adviser John Dee, become embroiled in delicious skulduggery. It's obvious in every word, every plot twist, and every character that Winterson had fun writing The Battle of the Sun. This book radiates enjoyment, and the reader can bask in it."
